AUGUST 13 FISHING REPORT

August 22, 2010

Kokanee*** Trout** Smallmouth bass***

Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters reported the beginnings of a slowdown in the kokanee bite after one of the best seasons in the past few years. Limits are still possible, but the bite is much slower than the past several weeks. Nichols was able to put in limits on each trip, but they had to troll through the morning into midday, changing depths and lures about every 15 minutes to locate the fish. Captain Jack Yandell, Shaver’s resident kokanee expert, continues to score a limit most days using the Captain Jack Fat Bug in green, chartreuse and orange, behind a Shaver Lake dodger. The majority of kokanee are located south of the island and Eagle Point, but they are scattered and range in depths of 30-55 feet. Nichols is also using Fat Bugs, salmon colored Apex lures, and orange and chartreuse Trout Busters tipped with shoepeg corn. The trout are also scattered, but are found in the same areas as the kokanee. Trout Busters or Apex lures tipped with a piece of crawler on the back hook and corn on the inside hook continue to work at depths from 12-20 feet with a tip of crawler on the back hook and corn on the inside hook. Said Nichols: “This is just a two-week slowdown, since I anticipate a good trout bite soon, as September was a great month last year.” In fact, a trout plant is on its way next week. Smallmouth bass are still plentiful around the rocks with live crickets or a multiple varieties of spinners. At Huntington, Dick Gomez said trolling action continues to be very slow, with the best action around the dam with inflated night crawlers. The leaders in Young’s Sporting Goods trout, kokanee and bass derby continue to be led by a 25-inch brown trout, a 16 5/8-inch kokanee and 15-inch smallmouth bass, all taken out of Shaver. Shaver has dropped to 87% of capacity, with Huntington holding at 99% of capacity.
