Resident lake expert Captain Jack Yandell and Hal Hilgemann have been boating limits of kokanee to 16.5 inches throughout the week. The kokanee are starting to show signs of entering the spawning stage. Dick Nichols of Dick's Fishing Charters said the bite improved, with limits being the norm due to an early-morning bite. Fishing has been best from 6-10:30 a.m. in the circle between the point, the dam, Road 2, and the island at depths from 50-55 feet with Captain Jack's Fat Bugs in chartreuse tipped with corn behind a Shaver Lake dodger. Nichols has been averaging four kokanee to each rainbow this week. Trout fishing improved due to last week's plant, with orange/chartreuse or red/chartreuse trout lures tipped with a piece of night crawler on the terminal hook and corn on the inside hook the best tactic — with most fish found in front of the dam or the Sierra Marina at depths to 12 feet. With the plant, shore fishing has improved with orange or rainbow Power Bait or Kastmaster lures. Smallmouth bass continue to pounce on live crickets or Panther Martin spinners in black/red in the rocks. At Huntington, Dick Gomez said the best action has been from the shorelines, near the auxiliary dam or the island with Power Bait or inflated night crawlers. Trolling remains slow. The leaders in Young's Sporting Goods trout, kokanee and bass derby continue to be a 25-inch brown trout, a 16 5/8-inch kokanee, and a 15-inch smallmouth bass, all Shaver. Shaver has dropped to 79% of capacity with Huntington at 99%.
