Dan and Gage Dungy of Fresno reported Huntington produced quick limits of small kokanee and trout to 3 pounds on Uncle Larry's spinners, Trout Busters or Wedding Rings with the majority of the fish coming off side poles with the Stevenson Trout Buster behind a Mountain Flasher. The fish were found next to the shoreline and close to the surface. Dick Gomez of Young's Sporting Goods sent most of his customers to Huntington due to the large crowds at Shaver over the holiday weekend, and he confirmed the large trout to 4 pounds landed by trollers and bank anglers. Power Eggs from the banks near Huckleberry Flat, Billy Creek or the Dam have produced trout to 2 pounds. At Shaver, Dick Nichols of Dick's Fishing Charters said, "The big rainbows are still the big topic here, and coupled with the good kokanee bite, the past week was a good one." He has been scoring mixed limits of trout/kokanee, but the key is to locating the schools of fish. During the Fourth of July weekend, Dr. Chris Lum and his 7-year-old son, Jonah, boated two limits of kokanee to 14 inches and a quality 3.25-pound rainbow with orange Humdingers or Apex lures tipped with corn behind a Captain Jack Dodger at a depth of 45 feet. Nichols also has been scoring with Trout Busters behind a Mountain Flasher on his side poles at a depth of 17 feet. He touted the Island, Eagle Point, and Stevenson and Tunnel creeks as locations holding fish. Bank anglers are scoring with inflated night crawlers or Power Eggs. Smallmouth bass action is heating up in the Dorabella Cove area with crickets of small spinners. Shaver has risen to 93% capacity, and Huntington is close to spilling at 99%. Wishon/Courtright
Trout ***
Chuck Crane of the Wishon Village RV Park said Wishon has been good for some but tough for others. There have been a number of the large trout to 22 inches landed in the past week with trollers scoring on the surface with trolling flies such as Woolley Buggers in black or green/red weighted by a small egg sinker. Speedy Shiners in copper or copper/red and bikini Needlefish also are working. Crane said, "The fish are there, you just have to find the right spot." Bank fishing has improved with pink Power Bait or inflated night crawlers near the Headwaters, across the Dam and at Short Hair Creek. Courtright is expected to be open by next week, as the road is cleared to the gate. Anglers are advised to call the RV Park to confirm the lake is open. The streams are dangerously high and very cold, and anglers are advised to pick their locations carefully since the only safe spots have been the deeper pools in Dinkey Creek. The flows are still too high for fly fishing. Call: Wishon RV Park 865-5361
Edison/Florence/Mammoth Pool
Brown trout *** Trout **
Dick Gomez of Young's Sporting Goods in Shaver Lake reported trollers have picked up a few large brown trout to 7 pounds at Edison on Rapalas. Quality browns and rainbows are taken by both trollers and bank fishermen. There has been more interest in the high country lakes with the heat suffocating the valley. A trout plant is scheduled for Portal Forebay this week. Edison jumped up to 88%, Florence is at 99%, Mammoth Pool at 101% and Redinger at 91%.
